babylon berlin:mitte

The complete film and video programme of transmediale.07 will be presented at babylon berlin:mitte. All events in the studio and studio II of the Arts Academy indicated as VP or FP will be replayed at the babylon.

The babylon berlin:mitte is one of the oldest still playing cinemas in Berlin. Opened in 1929 as a premiere cinema for silent films, the venue – embedded in a living- and trade-complex built by the architect Hans Poelzig in the style of New Objectivity – developed to a centre of the culture and film scene. After the Second World War the babylon became a premiere cinema again and in the 1980ies it finally turned out to be the only ´art cinema` in Eastern Berlin. After being closed in the 1990ies because of constructional remedies and being restored in an elaborated way, the meanwhile listed cinema has emerged as a centre for media and culture, especially as a venue for many international festivals and also as a meeting point and forum of the creatives in Berlin. So the babylon does not only present film screenings in these days, but also concerts, readings, exhibitions, installations and video art.
