What would a group of people, radically conscious of their own finiteness, do with a little extra time on earth? Pointing to H. G. Wells’ ‘The Chronic Argonauts’, this work explores the imagination and the experience of a group of people infected with HIV, projecting onto their future.

A Day to Remember

Liu Wei [cn]
see as well: Lounge: Wednesday 31/1 - Sunday 4/2, 10:00 - 21:00 @ Foyer
On June 4th, 2005 Wei walked with a camera to Peking University and the Tian'anmen Square. Both locations are closely connected to the incidents later known as Tian'anmen Square Protests or Tian'anmen Square Massacre. They refer to the violent ending of studential occupation of the square on the 3rd and 4th of June 1989 by the chinese military. On his way Wei asked people some simple questions concerning the 4th of June. Dodging words and averted behaviour demonstrate, that the Tian'anmen Square Massacre remains a strong taboo in present chinese society. Blank faces of younger people show evidence of the governmental propaganda strategy to cover and prohibit the topic thus causing the bloody incidences to slowly fade away in chinese collective memory.

Through the GPS coordinates, the title of the film identifies precisely, but abstractly, a location in Africa. As we follow two men roaming through this location, we discover a site that is by all appearances an archeological ruin. Yet, the images reveal this site to be the work of two labourers. They have sculpted thousands of bricks directly into the rock as if it were a piece of negative cityscape. This residual space is the inverted image of a planified city. At first sight, it is a document of the irregular practice of urban planning in Africa. But protocol used in filming and the addition of fictitious details, mean that it is also a factual fiction, which must be read on a metaphorical level. The workers play their own role as if they were moving projections. The names they are wearing on their T-shirts recall fictional literary characters, clues that indicate the possibility of other parallel readings.

Recollection

‘Recollection’ is like a psychological flashback that registers memories or dream-like longings, hovering and disappearing into ghostly blurs and soft colour fields.

Osmotic

A parking garage attendant with a hat and trench coat conducts the cars to one exit or another. The precise operation appears like the choreography of a powerful dance. The character of images and the musical composition annihilate boundaries; outside world and inner world merge.

One Short Story [1]

One Short Story [1] describes a junction in a forest, where things have happened that are difficult to imagine. It reminds of a fairy tale, or a short horrorstory. The soundtrack was composed by the Norvegian band Biosphere.
