Liu Wei (cn): A Day To Remember

Despite the simple handycam voxpop aesthetic, the jury wanted to make special mention of the work 'A Day to Remember' by Liu Wei. It reminds us of how quickly we forget remarkable moments in history and how easily human beings become complicit in the effectiveness of state controlled media and in ‘forgetting’. It raises questions of how local and global value is transmitted and differs, and how assumptions and outcomes vary in relation to censorship and the media. Seventeen years on, this short video documents a sample of a younger generation expressing ignorance, denial, fear and a strange knowingness in relation to acknowledging an awareness of the relevance of the date, the 4th of June 1989, when several hundred student protestors were massacred around Tian’anmen Square.
