The performance and video artist Erika Matsunami, born in Hiroshima, took her first lessons in japanese dance at the age of three at Fujima Toshika. Later she was taught by Hanayagi Masatoyo and completed her final dance audition in 1984 and took the artist name Hanyagi Hosenyu. In 1985 she completed her studies in sculpture at the Hijiyama College at Hisashi Akutagawa and Masanami Yoshida, where she afterwards has been working as scientific fellow. Since 1983 she is honoured with a lot of awards concerning her sculptures. Her studies in fine art she started in 1997 at Hochschule der bildenden Künste in Berlin at the department of art in context in the class of Katharina Jedermann and Wolfgang Knapp. In 1998 she did a placement at the photographer Thomas Dorn in Paris.
