Dark Empire

The American John Pilson (*1968 in New York) lives and works in New York. In his videos as well as in his photo-series he explores his hometown New York, the people and the relationship between the city and its inhabitants. This concern of his artistic work is insistently clarified in this video "Dark Empire". It was done in August 2003 during the blackout in New York. It shows a view on the Empire State Buidling over 25 minutes and during this time the view gets darker and darker until finally the screen is completely dark and the Empire State Buidling has disappered. Pilson becomes a witness of dependency and the vulnarable trust between New York and its inhabitants, the feeling of loneliness in a metropolis and the imminent danger of a system break down.
